The following information is provided to help you avoid some of the problems, which you may encounter when first arriving at Alicante airport (especially if it's at dark o’clock in the morning!).
The Airport
Alicante airport services almost the whole of the Costa Blanca, therefore expect it to be very busy during the summer season, with passengers arriving by the coach load from all the major 'package tour' destinations. The airport itself is modern and clean with marble floors, and the departures area has all the facilities you would expect for a modern international airport terminal - shops, bars, restaurants, Burger King, and of course tax free shopping.
Parking
Curent
costs for parking at the airport are: €0.75 per hour,
or €7.50 per day. Try not to lose your ticket, or your
charge may be calculated as 5 days parking! Once you
have paid, hang on to your ticket, you'll need this to exit via the
barriers.
Taxis & Bus Service
Taxis are available outside the airport to take you to your destination, but bear in mind that these taxi drivers are based in Alicante, may not know Torrevieja particularly well, and most do not speak English! Their charges are on average €40-50 to Torrevieja.
Buses
Buses are available outside the Airport terminal to take you to Alicante Railway Station - bus journeys cost €1 into Alicante.
On Arrival at the Airport:
Luggage Carousels
When you arrive at Alicante airport, having passed through passport control, the luggage carousels are located on the left hand side of the arrivals lounge.
Toilets
Toilets are located on the right hand side as you enter the arrivals area
Tip: if you or your family have had everything crossed for the last hour, make your way down to the other end of the arrivals lounge where there are some more toilets – but no queues!
Luggage can take as much as half an hour to arrive on the carousel – if you also have a hire car to collect - one of you may wish to wait for the luggage while the other goes to the hire car office (before the queues build up there too).
Directions to the hire car desks:
Opposite the luggage carousels
is a ramp leading down to the lower level and exit. The car
rental companies are all located to the left and right at the bottom of
this ramp.
Documents Required:
You will need to take with you:
- The email sent to you by the hire car company (with booking reference)
- Passport
- Driving License (for each driver)
- If you require an additional driver, make a point of telling the booking clerk (there should be no additional charge for extra drivers, providing they are over 21 - but they must appear on your hire agreement to be legal in Spain)
- The address of your accommodation in Torrevieja
- A contact telephone number
N.B. The charge may be some €40-50 more than originally quoted, because you may be charged for a full tank of fuel – you will be expected to return the vehicle EMPTY.
Location of Hire Cars:
The hire cars are located at the far end of the car park opposite where you exit the arrivals lounge. They are parked in bays marked with the hire company’s name. When you find your car, the exit from this car park is off to the right. I have also included a plan of the airport car park below to give you an idea of the layout before arrival. (This is based on hire cars from Europa Car Hire)
